In this helpful guide, you’ll be sure to find a ring that is just the right fit for you!
How to Measure Ring Size at Home
Measuring your ring size at home is an easy way to ensure that the ring you purchase is the perfect fit.
However, keep in mind these tips before starting to measure your finger:
When it comes to finding the perfect fit for your rings, sizing isn’t a one-size fits all situation.
If you have larger knuckles than normal, take into account both the base of your finger and knuckle when measuring as that could significantly change size up or down.
Temperature changes, physical activity like exercising and even medications can potentially impact ring sizes so be sure to measure at room temperature after taking any medication in order to get an accurate reading!
And lastly – if you find yourself teetering between two different sizes always err on the side of bigger instead since fingers swell during certain activities or times throughout our lives which would require some extra wiggle room anyways!
Measure your ring size with a measuring tape
You will need a flexible measuring tape, a ruler and a pen and paper. Begin by wrapping the measuring tape around your finger where you would like to wear the ring–make sure it fits comfortably.
Mark on the tape where it meets in a full circle, then measure this length on the ruler.
Write down the millimeter measurement, as this is your ring size. You can also measure the ring size in centimeters or inches.
Check below the chart in cm and inches.
Use dental floss or another string/thread
Wrap the string around your finger but not too tight. Make a mark on the string and use a ruler to check the measurement.
If using string, measure its length against a ruler before comparing it to a size chart for accuracy.
You can also cut out a thin strip of paper. Place it around your finger (not on the knuckle). Make sure it sits below the finger joint (as with floss or string). Mark the spot with a pen where the paper meets and use a ruler to measure the size.
Note: Get an accurate finger measurement by waiting until the end of your day – when fingers tend to puff up a bit more.
If you find that your knuckle is significantly larger than the base, consider taking two measurements and finding something in between!
Use a ring-measuring tool
There are different measuring tools you can use. You can print out a paper tool (download below), or use a metal or plastic ring sizer tool you can buy at the store.
Check out the different measuring tools we’ve listed below.
Use a ring that you already have at home
Instead of measuring your finger, you can use an existing ring you already own. You just need to measure the diameter of that ring with a measuring tape or thread or use a measuring tool.
Use a ring size app
Here is a handy app called ” Ring Sizer by Jason Withers” to measure your ring size. The app is rated 4+ stars.
With convenient features that allow you to measure using metric or imperial units, pick between diameter and circumference sizes to find the right fit.
This app supports sizes from around the world including USA, Australia, UK, Europe Japan and China.
The app is made for both apple and android phones.
You can download the ring sizer app here for apple.
And download the same ring sizer app for android here.
The U.S. Ring Size Guide
Selecting the right size ring is often a daunting task since each country has its own sizing standards.
However, in the US, understanding the US ring size guide can help increase your chances of selecting the perfect fit.
Measurement circles are used to denote ring sizes, and they are traditionally marked with numbers representing different sizes (in the UK, they use letters for ring sizes.)
U.S. sizes range from 3 to 13.5, with women typically wearing between 3 and 9 and men usually opting for 8 through 14 – but that’s not all they match…
Each number (and half-number) correlates to the width of your finger in millimeters. For example, 14 millimeters translates into size 4 – and it only gets larger from there!

How to Find Out your Partner’s Ring Size without Asking Them
If you are planning to surprise your partner with a special ring, you may find yourself at a loss when it comes to finding out their ring size without asking.
Fortunately, there are a few tricks that can help you figure out the perfect fit for them. For example, you can use a section of string or dental floss and measure the circumference of their finger after they have been asleep for an hour.
Alternatively, if they already own another ring that they wear on the appropriate finger, you can trace around the inside of the ring onto paper and get an accurate measurement from there.
You can also estimate a ring size by the height and weight of the person.
However, it’s okay if you don’t know the exact ring size when purchasing an engagement ring. Your partner can always go to the jeweler and resize the ring.

Estimated Ring Size by Height and Weight
Despite their seemingly obvious connection, height and finger size do not always align – being taller doesn’t guarantee bigger fingers.
However, there may be some correlation between weight and ring size; individuals often notice that when they gain or lose a few pounds it affects the circumference of their digit!
We tried to see whether information about one’s height and weight could accurately predict someone’s average ring size – typically ranging from 8 to 14 with sizes 8 – 12 as the most common measurements for men estimated at around 10 on average.

How to Resize a Ring at Home
Resizing a ring is a common issue for many jewelry owners. Luckily, it can be done quickly and easily at the jeweler! It’s easier to resize a ring that is big instead of a ring that is too small.
When the ring is too small, the jeweler needs to add an extra metal to the band.
You can’t really resize a ring by doing it yourself at home. That is why it’s important to get the size right in the first place.
Instead of measuring with one’s finger, use a precision tool such as calipers to get an exact measurement. To reduce the size of a ring, place the appropriate sizing tape or beads inside the band.
If you received an engagement ring and it’s the wrong size but you are super eager to wear it right away and show it off to your friends, there are temporary ways you can make it fit on your finger if it’s too big.
How to temporarily make the ring fit your finger:
If your ring is too big:
If your ring is too big then all you need is the thread. Start wrapping the thread on the bottom of the band around and round as long as the band gets thicker and the ring won’t fall off your finger anymore.
You can easily cut off the thread when going to the jeweler later.
If you have a cheap ring and you don’t mind attempting to try to resize it yourself, then you can add a clear aquarium-grade silicone on the inside of the ring.
Add it thicker to the bottom part of the ring. Use a straw to smooth the silicone inside the band. Wipe the extra silicone off the ring with a paper towel and wait 24-48 hours until the silicone is dry.
If your ring is too small:
If your ring is too small, you can wear it on a different finger until going to the jeweler and resizing the ring.
Or if you have a cheap ring, you can try to use the pliers to stretch the ring bigger yourself.
First, you need to make a mark on the center of the band and cut the line with the wire cutters. After that, use pliers to bend the ring open.
If you manage to do all that, it will leave a cap on the bottom of the band and you need to file the cut edges with a metal filer or heavy-duty nail flier. Otherwise, the edges might be too sharp and hurt your skin.
You can also use the pliers to squeeze the edges together so one overlaps the other to make the ring smaller.
However, it’s best to go to the jeweler to adjust your ring size professionally.
How is Ring Resizing Done at the Jeweler
The process of resizing rings can be an intimidating and often misunderstood task. Despite commonplace beliefs, not all ring adjustments are created equal – each one is as individualized as the jewelry itself!
The price range for such services differs significantly depending on complexity; simple work may cost around $50 while more labor-intensive projects could potentially reach over $350.
The process of resizing a ring is carefully divided into steps. To increase the size, goldsmiths delicately stretch open the shank and insert new metal called “sizing stock” to bridge the gap before soldering it in place for an impeccable fit.
Contrarily, when reducing its circumference two cuts are made which allow pieces of metal to be taken out from either side that can then be rejoined together with solder.
After altering a ring with gemstone embellishments, they must inspect and check every single stone in order to make sure none have been weakened by stress from shifting shapes and sizes.
Any loose ones needing to be quickly tightened or reset before being presented.
The cost of resizing a ring isn’t set in stone – it can vary considerably depending on the presence or absence of any number of features, including gemstones and engravings.
From traditional metals like gold to alternative materials such as tungsten, each type comes with its own particular challenges when sizing up or down.
And let’s not forget delicate rings that may require extra attention.
Note: Not every ring can be resized, especially if they have a unique design.
Resizing a ring can be tricky, especially when its design is intricate and unique. Ornate bands with precious inlays or metals like rhodium may not even qualify for resizing while those containing a specific number of gemstones may be harder to resize the band.
If you still want to resize your unique design ring that needs removing or adding metals, your jeweler may be able to do the alterations but impacts the weight and cost of the ring.

Ring Sizer Tools

If you want to get the exact size for that perfect ring, investing in a measurement tool is worth it.
Low-cost and easy-to-carry options are available online – from thin measuring tapes to keyrings with various sizes marked on them.
Not only can they help tailor the right fit when buying rings for yourself, but also make gift shopping easier too!
You can buy cheap measuring tools online for $4-$6.
Here are some examples of ring-sizing tools:

How to Fit a Ring with Big Knuckles
When selecting a ring size, don’t forget to take your knuckle into account! If you have larger knuckles, it’s best to order up half a size – otherwise, you wouldn’t be able to fit it into your finger.
Moreover, measure your finger a few times throughout the day. If you’re shivering in the cold or sweating from a hot day, your ring size may be affected!
To get an accurate measurement, take three to four measurements of your finger and use an average for a perfect fit.
How to Know if You Have the Right Ring Size
Finding the perfect fit for your ring finger is like a game of Goldilocks – not too tight, and not too loose.
Make sure to pick something that will stay securely on your digit but slip easily over the knuckle.
Does Band Thickness Affect the Ring Size
Choosing the right ring size isn’t always straightforward. Whether your rings are wide or slim can make a big difference – if they cover more finger surface, then you’ll need to go up in size!
You should consider how many bands will be worn together when selecting your perfect fit; for example, multiple wedding set styles may require larger sizes than expected.
To get it just right, use a sizer that is close to the thickness of what you plan on wearing and voilà – happy shopping!

Which is the Correct Engagement Ring Finger for Female and Male
Love knows no bounds, and the same could be said for where you place engagement rings.
While it is often seen that partners in many countries opt to wear their engagement ring on the left hand’s ‘ring finger’, as a representation of its direct path to one another’s heart, some choose to switch it after wedding ceremonies; wearing them instead on their right-hand side with a matching wedding band surrounding it.
The left ring finger has long been associated with love and commitment: the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans – all believed that a vein from this finger connected directly to the heart.
Even today people still wear an engagement ring on their left hand as a reminder of true dedication through time; an eternal bond between two hearts bound by “Vena Amoris”.
Here is a fun chart that demonstrates which countries use the wedding ring on the left hand:
Country | Engagement ring | Engagement & wedding ring |

Other Tips to Remember
Addressing Common Misconceptions
A common misconception in ring sizing is that your finger size is uniform across all fingers and remains constant over time. However, finger sizes can vary significantly between your dominant and non-dominant hand and can change due to factors like weight fluctuations, age, and even time of day. Understanding these variations is key in selecting a ring that fits comfortably at all times.
Seasonal Variations in Finger Size
Did you know that your ring size can change with the seasons? During warmer weather, fingers can swell slightly, while in colder temperatures, they might contract. This is an important consideration for those living in areas with significant seasonal temperature changes. We recommend measuring your ring size in different conditions to ensure a comfortable fit year-round.
Tips for Buying Rings as a Gift
Buying a ring as a gift can be challenging, especially if you’re unsure of the recipient’s ring size. One approach is to borrow a ring they already wear and use it as a reference. If that’s not possible, opting for adjustable rings or designs that can be easily resized is a wise choice. When in doubt, going with average sizes is usually safe – for women, sizes 6 to 7 are most common, while for men, it’s typically between 8 and 11.
Special Considerations for Different Ring Styles
Different ring styles may require unique sizing considerations. For instance, rings with wider bands often need a larger size than what you would wear in a narrow band. Continuous designs, like eternity bands, cannot be resized easily, so getting the right size from the start is crucial. Always consider the style and structure of the ring when determining your size.
