Whether it be the screaming sound of a blues band or the soothing sounds of a classical orchestra, the saxophone has always found a place in modern ensembles. The vast range and diversity of the different saxophones have made it a favorite of composers and performers alike. While the saxophone, a member of the woodwind family, has only been around for 150 years, it has firmly established itself in the hearts of minds of music fans the world over.
Though the saxophone has now become associated with American music, it was originally invented by a Belgian musician named Adolphe Sax. There are five main types of saxophones. They are called, from highest sounding to lowest, Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Baritone and Bass.
