The East 54th Street Recreation Center is a small gym located in midtown New York City offering a swimming pool, gymnasium, indoor track, basketball court, fitness room, dance room, weight room, cardio, and more. Various classes are available, where members can join in yoga, Zumba, swimming, aerobics, and numerous other group fitness activities.
First opened in 1911 to provide public showers for the city's working poor, the renovated four story, neo-classical building has retained much of its original character and history. The basketball court and jogging track are connected by two wrought ironwork spiral staircases, and the Guastavino tile, vaulted ceiling in the gymnasium, and the lobby ceiling are indicative of the architecture of the time. Marble walls in the locker rooms hearken back to the original marble baths. See Less
