Nick Burkhardt is a homicide detective in Portland, Oregon. He lives with Juliette Silverton, to whom he intends to propose and for whom he purchased an engagement ring.

On the day Nick purchased the ring, he saw a young woman outside the jewelry store briefly appear to be an old hag and saw a young man at the police station take on a monstrous visage. That evening, he arrived home to find that his Aunt Marie had arrived without notice. As they embraced, Marie told Nick that they had to talk. Later, Nick and Marie walked on a sidewalk near Nick's home and Marie asked if Nick had been seeing things. Shortly thereafter, a beast attacked Marie. She defended herself, but was losing the battle when Nick intervened and killed Hulda with his service weapon. Marie gave Nick a key on a chain that she had been wearing around her neck, telling him to never lose it.
