Meet Thishiwe Ziqubu: South African Actress, Writer and Director

 

South Africa’s film industry is one of the fastest developing African industries to compete and participate in the international film industry; the industry is establishing a footprint across Africa and continues to flourish. Thishiwe Ziqubu is a South African actress who comes from a humble background and she has graced the big screen and small screen with her roles in films exploring the African narrative through innovative storytelling.

The Kwa-Zulu Natal-born actress has scooped a number of South African and African Awards including the 2015 South African Film and TV Award for Best Actress in a feature film for her role in Hard to Get. Her most recent roles include her starring in local film, Wonderboy for President and Madiba alongside Laurence Fishburne. She made her acting debut in the award-winning movie, Man on Ground, directed Akin Omotoso, and for this, she was nominated as Best Supporting Actress at the 2013 AMVCA’s.

In addition to acting, Ziqubu also holds down a scriptwriting job for South African soapie, Rhythm City and has previously written for shows such as Scandal (South Africa) and Isidingo. As if that’s not enough, the talented actress has directed 3 short films and is working on her first feature film and she is the director of content production company, Ngonyama* Kapital.

Thishiwe also stars in Clement Virgo’s Canadian-South African co-production, Book of Negroes, Tell Me Sweet Something, Hard to Get, His Majesty’s Building, It’s Complicated and Out in Africa’s While You Weren’t Looking.

In order to juggle her hectic career and being a mother, she embraces optimal health and wellness to manage her hectic daily schedule and stay ahead of the game. She is a health enthusiast who initiated Ngonyama Force which focusses on health and wellness through an interactive blog which includes insights from highly qualified health and fitness experts, and life coaches who offer their advice and guidance on the blog.

This growing initiative aims to target young people and inspire South Africans to lead healthy and active lives through events, publications and the production of sporting gear.

*Ngonyama is an isiZulu word meaning Lion
